Greenwich commercially is distinguished by an extremely active and business-friendly environment, the headquarters for a number of the leading corporations in the U.S. and a growing concentration of hedge funds and financial service companies relocating from New York.

The town is home location of 10 of Connecticut's 100 largest industrial and service companies and six Fortune 500 companies are based in nearby communities, four of them in Stamford. (see more in Major Companies section)

Aside from a corporate presence, Greenwich is also a locale for retailers, medium and small businesses and consultants in areas such as public relations and media.

Among the major employers are the municipality and board of education, Greenwich Hospital, George Weston Bakeries, Greenwich Capital Markets, UST Inc., Unilever Home and Personal Care, Nestle Waters North America and the Hyatt-Regency Greenwich.

The Greenwich Chamber of Commerce reports 36,620 people are employed in town and the unemployment rate is 2.4 percent, compared to 4 percent unemployment in Fairfield Country and 4.3 percent Connecticut-wide.
