Greenwich, Connecticut enjoys one of the more favorable tax burdens in Connecticut as compared to many neighboring Connecticut and New York State communities. While Greenwich shares most of the state taxation burdens at equal levels to its state neighbors, its state administrated personal property taxes are lower than those found in other nearby municipalities since the personal property tax rate is levied by the Town of Greenwich. Real property taxes, which are also levied at the town level, are proportionally the lowest in the region because Greenwich is a no-debt, pay-as-you-go municipality where expenses are kept to an adequate minimum due to sound fiscal policy. This sound fiscal policy can be largely attributed to its town meeting style of government (RTM) where all citizens have input into governmental spending vs. the mayoral style of government found in many of the regions communities. A three selectman board initiates many commissions in boards in the town, but only has small input into town spending.
