Assisted Living Overview
Assisted Living is a growing lifestyle alternative primarily designed for people who are no longer inclined to maintain their own private home and need some level of health care. It is less costly than living in a nursing home or even home health care. Assisted Living combines residential living with personal support services and social and recreational activities and amenities. The services may include medication management, dressing, grooming, bathing and walking. The activities may also include social gatherings, health management and exercise classes. In some cases, the services are accompanied by amenities like swimming pools, tennis courts or golfing facilities. As part of the standard services, most assisted living communities offer meals, housekeeping, transportation and laundry.
The Assisted Living Federation of America reports more than 1 million Americans live in an estimated 20,000 Assisted Living residences. In Connecticut there are approximately 40 assisted living communities, nearly a dozen of them within an hour’s drive from Greenwich. The Assisted Living communities in the Greenwich region range from high-rise apartment complexes to free-standing, single-family structures. Fees vary but are usually based on the services that are utilized. Some communities offer a day rate—the average rate in Connecticut is $250 a day—others, a longer-term rate structure. The residents or their families generally pay the costs from-their own financial resources. In some cases, residents may be reimbursed through their long-term care insurance policies.
